Updated SDRuno software release roadmap

Post by jon » Fri May 17, 2019 12:15 pm

The software release roadmap for SDRuno has been updated to include V1.32 in the near future as a special release of the diversity software for RSPduo owners.

SDRuno Roadmap

1.32: Diversity (RSPduo only)

1.4: Plugin support (via documented API)
Remote client support
VFO IQ and audio recording
Automatic LO system (user just sets VFO)
Better support for multiple VRX use (improved settings support)
Improved INI file support (backup/restore)
Improved service support (restart/recovery)

2.0: Cross platform support (Windows, Linux/x86, MacOS)

All versions will also include bug fixes and user feedback (where possible)

It is no possible to commit the exact dates of these releases but these are the priority for our software development team.

Hello,

i have two RSP2 and connected each other REF IN and OUT with a cable.
Can i also do diversity receiving with the new version? How to set up?

Hello Hans,
Release 1.32 will provide diversity operation for the RSPduo only. The problem with the RSP2 is that whilst both devices will be phase locked, they are controlled and the data flows through separate USB interfaces. Random USB latency means that there will be a random timing alignment error between the two streams. To be able to perform diversity, you will need to align the timing of the two streams and this requires some kind of 'training pattern' and a correlator. We have research students who have done just this, but it is not a trivial task and you still have the problem of creating the training signal for the RF ports.

Sincerely

It allows you to lock your RSP2 to a GPS clock!

Hans,
I would politely request that you read the original post more carefully before you start throwing accusations like that around. The roadmap clearly stated that release 1.32 would provide diversity reception for the RSPduo ONLY. You responded by asking whether it would work with 2 RSP2s and I explained that it would not and why. I also explained how two RSP2s could be used for diversity and told you that we have worked with university researchers to implement this. It IS possible to synchronise (phase and time) multiple RSP2s together (we have seen 4 synchronised), but it will NOT be possible in release 1.32 as originally stated. You then asked what the point of the reference clock I/O was for and I explained that it can be used to lock the unit to a GPS clock. This can be very important for reception of narrow band signals at UHF and L-Band and this is what the overwhelming majority of RSP2 users that use this feature use it for - Sub PPB frequency accuracy.

Sorry if my last post "Well, false advertising then..." wasn't clear. It is not related to the new 1.32 version,
but related to the cable: https://www.sdr-kits.net/SDRplay-RSP2-Clock-Cable

"Allows for Diversity reception on 2 antennas" and "(Diversity Reception for 2 RSP2)"
is simply not true, as you explained it...

Thank you for the clarification. We can obviously accept no responsibility for such comments by third parties, but I do believe that what they say is technically true. As I explained, we have had customers who have used the technique explained above to obtain time and phase synchronisation which is the key to diversity reception.

Please see the following paper: https://www.sdrplay.com/wp-content/uplo ... -RSP2s.pdf

Can you say more about the type of antenna diversity that will be in the soon-to-be released SDRUno for RSPDuos?
For example will it include the ability to adjust phase and amplitude of combined channels?

Thanks
