getting started with sdrplay rsp1 unit is deaf

i installed required api drivers, downloaded the hdsdr software for windows.
the unit is plugged in to usb cable.
I see it in the video game controllers section of control panel device manager, but no where else.
the unit is deaf,I do not see or hear any sound or see any activity on the water fall
have a 2 meter 440 antenna connected, set it to 147.730 local repeater.
i do not even hear any sound coming from speaker when squelch is off on hdsdr.
it looks great, but no signals seen or heard.
noobie first time sdr user.
i am baffled.
using win 10 I5 hp lap top, running win 10.
