A Pi and RSP1a ....run via WebGUI ?

Post by NeilP » Thu Apr 05, 2018 10:18 am

Does the software on the Pi image allow the whole lot to be driven from any other computer or an iPad web browser from any where else on your local network ?

That is really what I'd like to achieve, but being totally new to this, with no hardware in my possession at the moment, and not even sure of the 'terms' to use, can't even asked correctly phrased questions.

Or rather than a Rasp Pi is it better to build a small stand alone computer running ?? What OS. I have servers at home running FreeNAS (FreeBSD variant), so have some experience in build stuff up. Plenty of old spare Windows machines kicking around. Wanting a headless system sitting in the attic, that I can drive and listen to VHF marine and airband

Suggestions please.

Hi Neil,

No, the Pi image software doesn't provide remote access.

It would be great to be able to easily operate an SDR device remotely but it is very hard to do.

The only straightforward way with an RSP1A (or any RSP) is by using SDR-Console with it's built in remote option, a good place to start reading about that is on the SDRPlay blog. SDR-Console is a Windows only application.

Most people know they can use a screen control program like TeamViewer or VNC to watch the remote SDR and interact with it. Even though that can bog down because of lack of computing power and slow network speeds, watching the SDR is not the difficult part.

The difficult part is getting to listen to it. Getting low latency sound over a network is the challenge, low latency means low delay. The streaming sound from internet radio stations and movies has typical delays well over 30 seconds and can extend to minutes, and even then that's much easier than an SDR because it's being sent from a prepared file on a disk rather than having to be grabbed in real time.

On my own home network I can listen to a single channel of voice quality audio from any ham radio in my radio shack using a Pi 3B with a delay of around 30 milliseconds, which is quite acceptable, but I had to write my own code to do it and can only listen to it using specialist apps like VLC or by using a second Pi inside the house so it's a messy solution and not for the faint hearted.

SDR-Console makes it look easy by comparison!

Ah well. not what i wanted to hear..so unless I spend £4000 plus on the device that I have seen that will do it, this project is dead int he water.

have no interest any more in doing this sort of stuff. just want to plug something in and use it.
Cheers for the reply ...and going to forget it all now. too much hassle to listed to a marine channels.

Wanted to do it really to get rid of the old bearcat scanner on my beside table.

Just seen this thread. Unless I misunderstand what you want to do I'm confused by the statement claiming you cannot get remote access with a Raspberry Pi - I'm using a number of SBC devices including Raspberry Pi and Odroid-C2 remotely. Just install the image on the RPi3, run SoapyRemote and then use CubicSDR on your remote machine (can be Windows, Mac or Linux, or even another RPi3 if you really want to). With the Odroid and Gigabit ethernet I can get 10MHz bandwidth remotely.

SDRuno will support remote working in a future release, but if you just want to visualise the spectrum remotely, SoapyRemote and CubicSDR works fine.

Best regards,

Umm maybe not all lost.

All I really want to listen to,( and to get rid of my bulky old manual scanner on the bedside table ) is air band frequencies, so 118.00Mhz up to 136 Mhz.
No interest in UHF air, just want the local frequencies at the airport (ATIS Twr etc) Really just to keep track of the local airport TIS and Twr frequencies when I am not at work.

I do a bit of boating too, so wanted the local Coastguard (Marine channel 82, ), channel 16 etc etc . Pierced weather reports etc ...not looking for a DX rig with multiple scanning of frequencies.

just the ability to store and recall a few local frequencies AM
119.450
120.300
125.200
134.675

and a few local marine FM channels, like Channel 16 156.800, 156.300, 156.400

If it were possible to store and listen to duplex channels and get both sides 157.150, 161.750 that would be handy too, but that would I guess require two tuners?

Basic voice calls, no SSB.
No idea what bandwidth I'd be needing ? any ideas?

If it ran from web browser on iPad ..that is the idea goal..

You can also setup openwebrx to provide a web interface - here's an example with the 2m band in Australia using the RSP2pro...

It really depends on what you want to do.

I wasn't aware of the option of using SoapyRemote and CubicSDR on your remote machine, thank you SDRplay for the heads up and apologies to Neil for my misinformation.

Perhaps it would be good to point this feature out in an article or writeup, I certainly missed it and there are frequent questions on the topic of remote operation and nobody answered Neil's question in four days.

Given Neil's post was based on
That is really what I'd like to achieve, but being totally new to this, with no hardware in my possession at the moment, and not even sure of the 'terms' to use, can't even asked correctly phrased questions.
I deliberately didn't mention the option of openwebrx because the SDR-Console option is easily achievable compared with openwebrx, as witnessed by the last entries in the openwebrx thread.

I started the thread on openwebrx in July last year

https://www.sdrplay.com/community/viewt ... ilit=vk7jj

Here is a screenshot of it operating on my LAN on 40 meters:

Openwebrx is a tantalising option being a web based solution.

In support of your suggestion to Neil, again it would be good if you could revamp the openwebrx code to support the RSP2 or RSP1A and write up an install and walk-through article to enable all those with little experience to achieve what you suggest. A ready-made web solution would be marvellous. How about it SDRPlay Support?

I believe this has already been done. Have you seen this...

That's where I started for my original build but last time I looked - not long ago - it hadn't changed from the version I used.

I posted a link to that site on my first openwebrx post last year.

I am actually not after scanning/monitoring a large chunk of bandwidth, and a few seconds delay, ( even 30 seconds) would not be an issue.

All I’d require is a check of pre programmed frequencies, 10-12 at most. Current aviation frequencies are 8.33khz spacing. Not wanting to monitor a whole chunk.

VLC ? as in the Mac Audio/video app? Yes I have that. Use it as my main player for most files.

How does the ‘second Pi inside the house’ setup work ? Could maybe build up one with a touch screen. Will the second Pi need Ethernet cable or will a WiFi connection be good enough ?
