Buying an Odroid XU4..options eMCC

Post by NeilP » Wed Mar 20, 2019 7:32 am

Just wondering about upgrading my Raspberry Pi to an Odroid XU4 to run my RSP1a (and maybe a duo in the future).

I run it with Soapy Remote and do my receiving downstairs in my living room on a Mac using CubicSDR

With the RPi, if I bump up sample rates to above 3, then the Pi just craps out. It can't handle the processing of any greater bandwidth

So before I jump in...will the Odroid XU4 handle the full 10Mhz Sample rate?

Still not been able to work it out. the Odroid can use eMCC modules..what are these ? are they instead of a micro SD , or as well as .
Do you boot from the eMCC or is it merely storage ?

Will I not notice any real difference between Micro SD or eMCC when using SoapyRemote?

Thanks

I stream the full 10 MHz around my network from both Odroid-C2 and Odroid-XU4 because Odroids have true Gigabit ethernet controllers.

mmc should be faster than SD card, but I'm just using SD card

Couple of things to note when making your decision...

1. C2 is 64bit ARM processor and the XU4 is 32bit
2. XU4 although being a 32bit processor has 8 cores
3. XU4 is probably almost 2x the cost of C2 (or it was when I got them)
4. In my experience, even though the XU4 on paper is more powerful than the C2 and it probably is for shifting data, in terms of using the desktop the C2 is by far less laggy for whatever reason.

I have headless images that I use for these devices as (in my opinion) you have to look quite hard to find a better SBC for the money.

Hope that helps,

Best regards,

Andy
