Digital Decoding Question ?

Hello,

Would like to play around with digital decoding, which I never had before.
Have a very, very, basic question please:

Have a RSP-2

Will try it with multipsk.

*What I don't understand is why you need a virtual audio cable (VM), apparently, and
also some software pckage like SDRUno between the RSP-2 output and multipsk.

*Can't multipsk take the output directly from the RSP, do the decoding necessary, and then send the audio to
a pair of headphones or pc speaker ? (Is the virtual audio cable for an optional setup, or always required; why ?)

What am I, as usual, missing ?
Would appreciate a basic description of how this all plays together, if anyone has a few spare minutes.

And,
Have played around with Sigmira over the last few days, and I can get it to
show stations on the waterfall and spectrum, but cannot get any audio, other than static, out of it.
It says it is compatible with RSP, but it's an old program and there doesn't seem to be any
way of switching ant inputs between the HiZ and ant A.

Even if only always looking at Ant A, I would have thought with the Scantenna I have hooked to it, I would have
heard "something". Especially since stations do show in the spectrums.

Any idea why this might be ?

Was wondering if, perhaps, this program requires the use of a virtual cable setup also ?

Regards,
Bob

This depends on your computer and the capabilities of its sound card.

"and also some software pckage like SDRUno between the RSP-2 output and multipsk."
Because yours ears can't process the data coming out of the RSP2 and neither can Multipsk. The SDR software (SDRUno in this case) makes it possible for you and Multipsk to 'hear' it.

The author of MultiPSK has recently produced a test version of MultiPSK which includes a direct I/Q interface with the RSP series of receivers. This version can be downloaded from a link on the multipsk forum at groups.io - it was posted on 21 April, so if you join that group you can get a copy.

Hi,

Thanks for replies.
Very helpful.

BTW: there's a Test vers 3 out now.
Here's the link to it:

“Here is the Multipsk test version 3 which fixes a bug on Multipsk, bug which generated a distortion http://f6cte.free.fr/MULTIPSK_4_39_1_test_version_3.zip"

Once you get things going, your next step is to find something that's readable. Hams are always readable - they're not permitted to use encryption, but they can and often use lots of different modes.

Apart from hams, then, there's a number of things you can hear and see. This wiki page from RadioReference's Digital Decoding article has links to these kinds of targets...

https://wiki.radioreference.com/index.p ... _New_Setup

Finally, while hams use Slow Scan TV, HF pirate stations have now taken up using this mode. We have a number of compatible packages listed below, including the very popular MM-SSTV, as well as numerous other decoder packages, some of which are SDR compatible

https://wiki.radioreference.com/index.p ... e_Decoders

Keeping a watch on the Extreme SW Listening group on Facebook and the HF Underground will turn these stations up.
