Digital Decoding Question ?

Hello,
Would like to play around with digital decoding, which I never had before.
Have a very, very, basic question please:
Have a RSP-2
Will try it with multipsk.
*What I don't understand is why you need a virtual audio cable (VM), apparently, and
also some software pckage like SDRUno between the RSP-2 output and multipsk.
*Can't multipsk take the output directly from the RSP, do the decoding necessary, and then send the audio to
a pair of headphones or pc speaker ? (Is the virtual audio cable for an optional setup, or always required; why ?)
What am I, as usual, missing ?
Would appreciate a basic description of how this all plays together, if anyone has a few spare minutes.
And,
Have played around with Sigmira over the last few days, and I can get it to
show stations on the waterfall and spectrum, but cannot get any audio, other than static, out of it.
It says it is compatible with RSP, but it's an old program and there doesn't seem to be any
way of switching ant inputs between the HiZ and ant A.
Even if only always looking at Ant A, I would have thought with the Scantenna I have hooked to it, I would have
heard "something". Especially since stations do show in the spectrums.
Any idea why this might be ?
Was wondering if, perhaps, this program requires the use of a virtual cable setup also ?
Regards,
Bob
