Setting up SDRUno to be controlled by Omni-Rig?

Post by franko » Sat Apr 20, 2019 8:59 pm

I'm interested in using Faros 1.4 (http://www.dxatlas.com/Faros/) with an SDRplay RSPduo and SDRUno to monitor NCDXF beacons (http://www.ncdxf.org/pages/beacons.html). This involves:

-- SDRUno passing audio to Faros via VAC (something I'm very familiar with from working with WSJT-X); and

-- using Faros' Omni-Rig functionality to pass commands to SDRUno to do frequency changes.

The audio interface shouldn't be a problem, but I've never controlled SDRUno from another software app using Omni-Rig. I gather I'll need to define one or two virtual com ports to use as the interface.

Beyond that, any suggestions on what I need to do on the SDRUno end? Is there a particular place in SDRUno, for example, that I would enable Omni-Rig control and enter the number of the com port to monitor? Are there any writeups anywhere that cover topics like this?

Hello Franko,

In the RX control panel Settings (under CAT) you can set up the COM device and baud rate. Then click Enable and connect.

If you have everything set up correctly, this will then make SDRuno respond to CAT control. Remember that SDRuno behaves like a Kenwood TS-480 so that is the transceiver control you will need to select.

Best regards,

Andy

Thanks, Andy, that's a huge help. SDRUno (or anything related to SDRplay) isn't on Faros' list of rigs to choose from, but the Kenwood TS-480 is, so I'll go with that. That piece of information alone probably saved me substantial wheel-spinning.

Now I just have to reacquaint myself with creating the virtual com port, but I've done it before for another application so hopefully it won't be too involved.

Edit: I see there is a recent SDRplay video guide on virtual com ports, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZg7puQ9Ajk. I'll certainly start with that.
