depends on what you want to do. The RPi4 is technically a better device, but it's only been out for a couple of weeks so people are still finding their feet with it.

We support both - I'm in the process of putting together an image full of software that supports our devices that is compatible with the RPi4

If you want to future proof yourself then the RPi4 will be a better device over time. It has a proper native gigabit ethernet controller (whereas the RPi3 didn't) so it can stream 10 MHz of bandwidth across a LAN easily enough. The RPi4 also has more memory options (I've gone for the 4GB model, but there are 1GB and 2GB available)

Whatever you do though, I would recommend a case with a fan - these things can get quite hot and then their performance suffers.

If you have a specific use case in mind, that might help people point you in the right direction.

Hope that helps,

Best regards,

Andy

As Andy stated it really depends on what your wanting to do on it.

ADS-B/AIS, Web/FTP server, VHF/UHF RX with a dongle and something like GQRX - RPi will do all these without any problems.
Unless you are running CPU/Memory intensive programs, then the RPi4 might be a bit of overkill.

Also note with the new image, Buster I think they call it, there are still issues with it and certain software will not run due to missing dependencies and other problems.

Currently I have 10 RPi 3+'s and have no plans on rushing out and getting a 4 right now.

Hello Andy, when will the image for the Raspberry 4 be available?

We have started internal testing of the image. Few issues to iron out. Hope to have more news very soon.

Best regards

Andy

Another difference is with SD cards. The new model supports switching to 1.8V and as such SDR104 seems to work (doubling both random IO and sequential transfer rates from 25MB/s to 50MB/s).
